Chihuahuas hold big personalities inside their tiny little bodies. Feisty at times, the Chihuahua is sweet-natured with its family and will love to burrow into any blankets it can find.
There are two different kinds of Chihuahuas – Long Coat (pictured) and Smooth Coat. Chihuahuas are known to have a bad reputation for being nasty little creatures that bite, however Chihuahua personalities are extremely variable, ranging from bold and high-strung to timid and mellow.
A Chihuahua’s personality depends on genetic temperament, so consider meeting the parents before bringing one home. It’s normal for dogs of this breed to form attachments with a single person, and they’ll love nothing more than to be close to you at all times. You’ll enjoy their fun loving and affectionate nature – they make great cuddle buddies!
Lifestyle and Living Environment
The amount of energy a small Chihuahua has is surprising and it will need to be released with lots of exercise and playtime. Since they are bred as companions, the best place to spend the majority of its time is with you. Housebreaking can be very difficult and we recommend considering an indoor litter box. They are curious explorers and have been known to escape yards through small gaps in the fence. Be careful if you own a larger dog because they can easily get injured.
Common Health Issues
Chihuahuas are prone to: Patellar Luxation, Hypoglycemia, Heart Murmurs, Pulmonic Stenosis, Collapsed Trachea, Hydrocephalus, Open Fontanel, Shivering.
